About the event

About the artist: Michael Challenger ‘s (b. 1939, UK)  work is rooted in visual enigmas, which he skilfully evokes by combining colours, shapes, and geometric forms. Challenger’s work is infused with a strong interest in classical music, and analogies are easily made between the sphere of sound and his visual output. He highlights the influence of Surrealism on his practice, with particular reference to the alienating enigmas in de Chirico’s work. He cites 1966 as the beginning of his artistic exploration into spatial illusion, while working on a sculpture of a swimmer. The area representing water was deliberately left empty, leaving the task of identifying and filling the unseen space to the viewer’s brain and perception. Notable public collections include Tate Gallery Collection, UK; Victoria & Albert Museum, UK; British Museum, UK; British Council, UK; Slade School of Art, UK;  Museo del Castelvecchio - Verona, Italy; Boston College, Massachusetts, USA; Yale Centre…
